In 1981 Tom Nicchi converted a basement space below his restaurant (named “The Deli Works”) into a comedy club just as the stand-up comedy “boom” was hitting. He named it “The Comedy Works” and it was an immediate success with shows hosted seven nights a week. Often times the club would sell out and guests would sit in the stair well just to listen to the shows. During the 1980s & 1990s comics like Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, Dennis Leary and Chris Rock all performed at The Comedy Works.
